Quicklime (mainly composed of calcium oxide, CaO) is an indispensable and important raw material in iron and steel smelting. Its main role is to act as a slag-forming agent, participating in impurity removal and slag regulation during the smelting process. One of the core requirements of iron and steel smelting is to reduce harmful impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and silicon in pig iron. As a strong alkaline substance, quicklime can chemically react with these impurities to form stable compounds that enter the slag, thereby separating from the metal.
Quicklime can increase the basicity of the slag, keeping the slag with appropriate fluidity and viscosity. If the basicity is too low, the slag's impurity removal capacity will be weak; if it is too high, the slag will be too viscous, making operation difficult. Therefore, the amount of quicklime added needs to be precisely controlled to regulate the slag properties and ensure efficient impurity separation.
The linings of equipment such as steelmaking converters and blast furnaces are mostly made of basic refractory materials (such as magnesia bricks). The alkalinity of quicklime can neutralize acidic substances in the furnace, reduce erosion of the furnace lining, and prolong the service life of the equipment.
