Slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca (OH) ₂) can be used for the production of sulfonates, especially calcium sulfonates. It participates in the neutralization reaction of sulfonates as a calcium source and is one of the common raw materials for industrial preparation of calcium sulfonates.

Sulfonate is a very important functional component in lubricating oil additives, mainly used as detergents and dispersants, and widely applied in fields such as engine oil and industrial lubricants.

Using alkylbenzene sulfonic acid as the raw material, after neutralization with slaked lime, a "super-alkalinization" process (adding excess calcium oxide/slaked lime and carbonating with CO₂) is employed to prepare high-base-number sulfonates. Their alkaline reserve can neutralize acidic substances (such as SO₂ and NOₓ) generated by engine fuel combustion, preventing the formation of carbon deposits and sludge.

Slaked lime can be used as a calcium source in the production of sulfonates, especially calcium sulfonates. It offers advantages of low cost and mild reaction, making it suitable for medium-to-low base number products or composite calcium source systems.

Properties and Potential Risks: Hydrated lime is corrosive. Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline, with a pH value ranging from 12 to 13.5. Direct skin contact can cause skin defatting and dryness, leading to symptoms such as redness, swelling, and burns. If it gets into the eyes, it may damage the cornea and conjunctiva, potentially causing vision impairment. Inhalation of its dust can irritate the respiratory mucosa, resulting in coughing, difficulty breathing, and other discomforts.

Safe Operation Guidelines: The risks can be effectively minimized by following safety operation procedures. When handling hydrated lime, it is essential to wear protective equipment, including rubber gloves, safety goggles, dust masks, and protective clothing, to prevent skin and eye contact as well as inhalation of dust. For storage, place hydrated lime in a cool, dry, and well - ventilated warehouse, keeping it away from fire sources, heat sources, acids, and food chemicals to prevent mixing storage.
