Calcium hydroxide is a white powdery inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)₂. It has strong alkalinity and can partially dissociate into hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water, which is the core basis for its application in wastewater desulfurization. The core of calcium hydroxide used in wastewater desulfurization is to use its alkaline characteristics to undergo neutralization reactions and redox reactions with acidic sulfides in wastewater, convert soluble sulfides into insoluble precipitates, and then remove them through separation processes to achieve wastewater purification. According to the different forms of sulfides in wastewater, the reaction mechanism is mainly divided into the following two types, covering most industrial sulfur-containing wastewater scenarios.
Second, for alkaline sulfur-containing wastewater containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), acid-base neutralization and redox reactions mainly occur. H₂S dissociates into hydrogen ions and sulfide ions in water. The hydroxide ions provided by calcium hydroxide neutralize the hydrogen ions and react with the sulfide ions to form calcium sulfide (CaS) precipitates; if the wastewater is in an aerobic environment, part of the calcium sulfide will be oxidized to calcium sulfate, further reducing the sulfur content in the wastewater.
