The "Dual Roles" of Calcium Hydroxide---Reaction Participant and Product Stabilizer
In the preparation process of calcium hypochlorite, the role of calcium hydroxide is not limited to the reaction stage but also extends to the stable storage of the product, forming a dual support of "reaction participation + product protection".
On one hand, as a reaction raw material, the dosage and form of calcium hydroxide directly affect the reaction efficiency. In industrial production, calcium hydroxide needs to be processed into lime milk (rather than dry powder). The dispersibility of this suspension can increase the contact area with chlorine gas, avoiding insufficient local reaction or side reactions caused by excessive chlorine gas (such as the formation of ineffective impurities like calcium chlorate). Meanwhile, the concentration of lime milk must be strictly controlled (usually a suspension of a certain ratio). Excessively high concentration will make the reaction system viscous and hinder gas circulation; excessively low concentration will reduce the product concentration and increase subsequent separation costs. Moreover, the purity of calcium hydroxide directly determines the product purity of calcium hypochlorite.
On the other hand, after the reaction is completed, a small amount of excess calcium hydroxide is intentionally retained in the product to stabilize calcium hypochlorite. Calcium hypochlorite itself is easily affected by environmental factors such as moisture and carbon dioxide, undergoing decomposition reactions and losing effectiveness. The reaction equation is: Ca(ClO)₂ + CO₂ + H₂O = CaCO₃↓ + 2HClO, and HClO further decomposes into HCl and O₂, resulting in the loss of the product's bleaching and disinfection activity. The excess calcium hydroxide can neutralize acidic substances that may be generated in the system, inhibit the decomposition of hypochlorous acid, and isolate part of the carbon dioxide from contacting calcium hypochlorite, significantly extending the product's shelf life.
