Solubility: Insoluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in water. Its saturated aqueous solution is commonly known as lime water, and the milky white suspension formed with water is commonly known as lime milk. It is soluble in glycerol.
Chemical properties
Decomposition reaction: It decomposes when heated at 580°C to form calcium oxide and water.
Reaction with elements: It can react with carbon under heating conditions to produce calcium oxide, calcium carbonate and hydrogen; it can react with sulfur under heating conditions to form calcium sulfide, calcium thiosulfate and water; it can react with chlorine gas at room temperature to generate calcium hypochlorite, calcium chloride and water.
Reaction with acids: As a strong base, it can react with acids to form the corresponding salts and water. For example, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride and water.
Reaction with salts: It can react with salts to form new salts and bases, basic oxides or ammonia. For instance, it reacts with sodium carbonate to form calcium carbonate precipitate and sodium hydroxide.
Reaction with acidic oxides: It can react with acidic oxides to generate the corresponding calcium salts of the acids and water. For example, it reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate and water.
Reaction with peroxides: It reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form calcium peroxide and water.
