Basic Chemical Attributes
Alkaline Characteristic: Calcium hydroxide is a medium-strong base. Its aqueous solution (commonly called lime water) is alkaline, with a pH value typically ranging from 12 to 13 depending on concentration (the pH of a 0.1mol/L aqueous solution is approximately 12.4 at 25℃). In bleaching powder production, this alkalinity enables a disproportionation reaction with chlorine gas (Cl₂), producing calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)₂, the main active component of bleaching powder), calcium chloride (CaCl₂), and water. The core reaction equation is: 2Cl₂ + 2Ca(OH)₂ = Ca(OCl)₂ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O, which constitutes the core chemical basis for the formation of the active component in bleaching powder.
Solubility: Calcium hydroxide has low solubility in water, and its solubility decreases as the temperature rises (the solubility is approximately 0.165g/100mL at 20℃, dropping to around 0.077g/100mL at 100℃). This characteristic allows it to form stable lime milk (a calcium hydroxide suspension) in bleaching powder production. It not only ensures sufficient contact and reaction with chlorine gas but also avoids difficulties in subsequent product separation caused by excessively high solubility. Meanwhile, the low solubility reduces the loss of raw materials in water.
