Calcium Oxide (CaO), commonly referred to as quick lime , is an extensively utilized chemical compound across various industries. It exists as a white, highly caustic, alkaline, and crystalline solid at room temperature, exhibiting distinct physical characteristics that make it indispensable in numerous applications. The typical appearance of quick lime is a pristine white powder, which, when contaminated with impurities, can turn a light yellow or gray hue. One notable physical property of this compound is its hygroscopicity, meaning it has the ability to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. This characteristic is particularly significant in industries where moisture control is crucial.
Calcium oxide (CaO) is widely used in desulfurization, mainly in the treatment of industrial waste gases (such as flue gases from coal - fired power plants) and industrial waste water. The specific applications are as follows:
Reaction Principle: In the process of flue gas desulfurization, calcium oxide reacts chemically with sulfur dioxide (SO₂). First, calcium oxide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), and then calcium hydroxide reacts with sulfur dioxide to form calcium sulfite (CaSO₃), which is further oxidized to form calcium sulfate (CaSO₄), that is, gypsum. The relevant chemical reaction equations are as follows:
CaO + H₂O = Ca(OH)₂
Ca(OH)₂ + SO₂ = CaSO₃ + H₂O
2CaSO₃ + O₂ = 2CaSO₄
Application Method: Usually, calcium oxide is made into slurry and sprayed into the sulfur - containing flue gas through equipment such as spray - drying absorption towers or wet desulfurization towers. In the spray - drying absorption tower, during the contact process between the slurry and the flue gas, sulfur dioxide is rapidly absorbed, and at the same time, water evaporates, eventually forming a dry desulfurization product. The wet desulfurization tower conducts the reaction in a liquid - phase environment, which has a high desulfurization efficiency. The generated gypsum can be separated and recovered through a dehydration system to obtain the by - product gypsum.
Reaction Principle: Sulfides in waste water (such as hydrogen sulfide H₂S, sodium sulfide Na₂S, etc.) can react with calcium oxide. Calcium oxide first reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, and then calcium hydroxide reacts with sulfides to form calcium sulfide (CaS) and other substances. Taking hydrogen sulfide as an example, the chemical reaction equation is: CaO + H₂O + H₂S = CaS + 2H₂O. If sulfate ions (SO₄²⁻) are present in the waste water, under certain conditions, calcium oxide can also participate in the reaction to convert sulfate ions into calcium sulfate precipitation.
Application Method: First, calcium oxide is dissolved in water to make lime milk, and then it is added to the sulfur - containing waste water. The waste water and lime milk are fully mixed and reacted by means of stirring to form calcium sulfide precipitate or calcium sulfate precipitate from sulfur ions, so as to achieve the purpose of removing sulfur from the waste water. After the reaction, the waste water goes through processes such as precipitation and filtration to separate the precipitate and realize the purification of the waste water.
Calcium oxide has the advantages of low raw material cost, high desulfurization efficiency and recyclable products in desulfurization, so it has been widely used in the industrial desulfurization field. However, attention should also be paid to the safety issues in the use of calcium oxide and the reasonable disposal and utilization of desulfurization products to avoid secondary pollution.
