Calcium hydroxide (chemical formula: Ca(OH)₂), commonly known as slaked lime or hydrated lime, is an important inorganic basic compound. It is prepared by the exothermic reaction of calcium oxide (quicklime) with water. Its appearance is fine white powder, slightly soluble in water, and its solubility decreases with increasing temperature. The upper clear solution formed after dissolving in water is called clear lime water, and the lower suspension is called lime milk or lime slurry. It has typical strong alkaline properties, and at the same time has good water absorption, stability and reaction activity. It is stable in performance at room temperature, easy to store and transport, and non-toxic and harmless.
In the industrial field, calcium hydroxide can be used as a raw material for the production of baking soda, caustic soda, high-grade bleaching powder and other products. It can also be used in the production of propylene oxide by the chlorohydrin method and the extraction of magnesium oxide from seawater. At the same time, it can be used as a heat stabilizer in PVC production, effectively inhibiting PVC decomposition and improving product stability. In the environmental protection field, as an economical and efficient neutralizer, it is widely used in industrial wastewater treatment, which can neutralize free acids, precipitate heavy metal ions, and reduce the concentration of wastewater pollutants. It is also used for boiler flue gas desulfurization, with a desulfurization efficiency of more than 98%, helping industrial emissions meet standards. In addition, it can be used for deodorization of landfills and solidification of hazardous waste to reduce environmental pollution. In the agricultural field, as the core component of calcareous fertilizer, it can adjust the pH value of acidic soil to the suitable range of 6-7, improve soil structure, supplement calcium elements, and increase crop yield and quality. At the same time, it can be used to prepare the pesticide Bordeaux mixture and apply lime slurry to trees to achieve insect control and sterilization. In the construction field, it can be used as an asphalt filler to improve anti-stripping effect. When mixed with water and applied to walls, it absorbs carbon dioxide in the air and solidifies to form calcium carbonate, which has both decorative and protective effects. It can also be used to prepare calcium silicate insulation materials and improve the performance of cement and mortar. In the food field, as a safe and compliant food additive (E526), it can be used in sugar refining, konjac gel food production, calcium supplement production, as well as the neutralization and buffering of products such as beer and cheese. In the medical field, it can be used as a root canal filling material and pulp capping agent to inhibit bacterial growth and repair wounds. At the same time, it can be used as an auxiliary agent in pharmaceutical preparations for the extraction of active ingredients from Chinese herbal medicines.
